Living And Learning As One

Healthy Schools

I am very proud to announce that Cwmlai Primary School has been awarded the National Quality Award for Healthy Schools Schemes. This is a prestigious award that recognises the hard work of the children and staff at Cwmlai and the Governors and parents for their support and commitment.

Parents who want their children to eat more fruit and vegetables should give them an apron and let them cook!”

The ‘Healthy School’ is one which takes responsibility for maintaining and promoting the health of all who ‘learn, work, play and live’ within it not only by formally teaching pupils about how to lead healthy lives but by enabling pupils and staff to take control over aspects of the school environment which influence their health.

It actively promotes, protects and embeds the physical, mental and social health and well being of its community through positive action.

This can be achieved by policy, strategic planning and staff development about its curriculum, ethos, physical environment and community relations.

Welsh Network of Healthy School Schemes - Public Health Wales (nhs.wales)

Cwmlai Primary School is working towards the National Quality Award of Healthy Schools.  The children of the School Council and Eco Committee have been working extremely hard with Mrs Roberts, over the last couple of years,  to ensure the 6 areas to this award have been covered sufficiently.

The National Quality Award is the highest honour a school (nursery, primary, secondary and special) can obtain through the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools. The award recognises excellence in whole school practice across a number of health-related themes including:

•    Food and fitness (nutrition and physical activity)
•    Mental and emotional health and wellbeing, including staff wellbeing
•    Personal development and relationships, including relationships and sexuality education
•    Substance use and misuse, including alcohol, smoking and drug use and misuse (legal, illegal, and prescription)
•    The environment, including eco-initiatives and improving the school and wider environment
•    Safety, including a variety of topics such as child protection, sun safety, internet safety, and first aid
•    Hygiene across school and non-school settings

Public Health Wales are visiting Cwmlai on 16th February to speak to School Council/Eco Committee, Mrs Rees and all members of staff involved in promoting this Award.  I am sure PHW will acknowledge all the dedication and hard work children and staff have completed in promoting Cwmlai as a healthy school and find in favour of awarding the school the National Quality Award

Cwmlai Healthy fruits and delights

We aim to offer healthy fruits and snacks. We will not be selling nuts or grapes. We will be charging in order to cover the cost of the foods. Prices are in one of the pictures. The most expensive item is 50p but there are plenty of items that are 20p/ 30p.

We will be selling the snacks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at morning break in the shelter in the Junior playground. The pictures show the type of foods available. We ask you to let your child know if they have allergies to anything so they do not purchase them.

Please encourage your child to visit the shop
In support of our healthy eating policy.
Many thanks,
School Council.

Healthy Snacks in Primary Schools - We only encourage fruit or vegetables for a healthy snack in Cwmlai Primary School.. See the attached document for ideas.
